Through a study, carried out by CERMI (Spanish Committee of Representatives of People with Disabilities) and by Technosite on a total of 30 companies, the vast majority of the websites of large companies in the Spanish market do not have the level of accessibility required by the law.
The websites of the large companies in the market…
Specifically, of the aforementioned 30 companies included in the study, only six (Iberdrola, Mercadona, Vodafone, La Caixa, Alcampo and Endesa) have websites with an accessibility level greater than 50%. The first of them stands out with 94.44% while the electricity company stays right at said 50%.
The levels of the rest of the entities do not exceed the 50% stipulated by law. These companies analyzed in the study have been: Mapfre, Unicaja, Carrefour, Telefónica, EMT Madrid, Movistar, Aguas de Barcelona, Iberia, BBVA, Banco Santander, Gas Natural, Eroski, ABC, Renfe, El País, Unión Fenosa, Jazztel, Autores, El Mundo, TMB Barcelona, Televisión Española, orange, Telecinco and El Corte Inglés.
Thus, we can deduce that the websites of large companies in the Spanish market are not very accessible. Entities with as much renown as El Corte Inglés or Telecinco obtain a very low percentage of compliance.
It was a few years ago when the avian flu information page was launched. This suffered numerous criticisms that even appeared in some digital newspapers.
Nowadays, with a different flu being in the media every day, at least it seems that a little lesson has been learned and a page has been published to provide information about it.
Maybe it has accessibility errors, but compared to avian technology, there is an abyss of development that separates them, but let’s not fool ourselves, the knowledge was as much in 2005 as it is today in 2022.
And precisely, in 2022, how can it be that important companies obtain such a low grade in terms of Web Accessibility? No desire? No interest? Don’t you know how to do it? Are there a lack of complaints? Or rather, do the complaints that have been made need to be executed?
We must remember that it is not enough to hire a company to create or adapt a site so that it is accessible, we must be aware of it, know what it means, the improvements we will obtain… It cannot be done because it is a “fashion” or because in marketing terms “it looks good.”
Interest, awareness, desire, training, specialization and a little effort are the keys to making our site accessible. It is better to try and little by little manage to solve problems than to opt for the “easy” solution and do nothing at all.
At ‘Your Accessible Web’ we put at your disposal an expert team in terms of accessibility, made up of auditors and programmers, who will carry out a complete analysis of your web portals, and will be in charge of adapting them to the mandatory AA compliance level, or will raise your digital platform to higher levels.
