Retail & E-commerce

Don't lose 15% of your potential customers: make your online store accessible and comply with the EAA.

EAA 2025
WCAG 2.2
Directive 2019/882

Why must e-commerce be accessible?

E-commerce has become an essential shopping channel for millions of people. However, online stores often present critical barriers: carts inoperable by keyboard, product pages without alternative text, payment gateways with visual captchas, and forms without labels. The European Accessibility Act (EAA), transposing Directive 2019/882, explicitly includes e-commerce among sectors required to guarantee accessibility from June 2025. Any online store selling to European consumers must comply with WCAG 2.2 standards. But accessibility is not just a legal obligation: it is a competitive advantage. An accessible store improves SEO (semantic HTML), increases conversion rates (better UX for everyone), expands the potential market (over 80 million people with disabilities in the EU), and strengthens brand image.

Everything you need to know

Yes. The European Accessibility Act (EAA) requires from June 2025 that all e-commerce services targeting European consumers be accessible. This includes the web store, mobile app, payment gateway, and all transactional digital communication.
Positively. Studies show that an accessible store improves usability for all users, reduces cart abandonment rate, improves SEO (semantic HTML), and expands the potential market to over 87 million people with disabilities in the EU.
Yes. Each product image must have descriptive alternative text allowing screen reader users to understand what is shown. Additionally, sizes, colors, and variants must be keyboard-selectable with clear labels.
As the e-commerce owner, you are responsible for ensuring the entire purchase flow is accessible, including the payment gateway. If you use an external provider (Stripe, Redsys, PayPal), you must verify their integration meets WCAG 2.2 or seek accessible alternatives.
Yes. The EAA covers the entire e-commerce experience, including transactional communications. Confirmation, shipping, and return emails must have semantic structure, alternative text, and be readable in high-contrast mode.
Not at all. Well-implemented accessibility is invisible: it improves code structure, visual hierarchy, and navigation without sacrificing aesthetics. In fact, many accessibility improvements (contrast, typography, spacing) benefit the experience for all users.
