Fundación ONCE has had the ‘Ga11y’ program for a few months now, which seeks to achieve equal opportunities for all people in different areas of society.

Its objective is that video games can be enjoyed by everyone, which is why it tries to improve the accessibility of video games for people with disabilities.

‘Ga11y’ aims to promote, within the video game sector, the inclusion of accessibility parameters so that all people can enjoy this type of leisure and be, at the same time, a reference in Spanish in terms of video game accessibility.

What does accessibility mean in video games?

Accessibility in video games refers to the practice of designing and developing video games so that they can be enjoyed by as many people as possible, regardless of their abilities or disabilities.

To achieve this objective, a series of features and adjustments are implemented that allow people with different physical, cognitive or sensory situations to play and enjoy video games fully and without barriers.

However, accessibility in video games is not only about making games accessible, but also improving the user experience for all players. Offer a wide range of customizable controls so that the player can experience the game in the most personalized way possible.

Accessible features that can benefit all users:

  1. Control Configuration Options: Allow players to customize game controls, such as assigning functions to specific buttons and enabling different control schemes.
  2. Subtitles and transcriptions: Provide transcriptions for dialogues and events in games, in addition to being able to customize their font, colors and size.
  3. Audio settings: Allow you to customize the audio volume in different aspects such as the volume of effects or activate visual indications for important audio events.
  4. Adjustable game speed: Allows users with different visual situations to adapt to their needs and customize color sensitivity.

What video game catalog does Ga11y have?

The program is hosted on the website https://ga11y.fundaciononce.es/ and has a catalog of more than 50 games analyzed and referenced from the point of view of accessibility.

This catalog has a search option that can be parameterized according to the profile and type of disability of the interested person, so that they know whether or not they will be able to enjoy the desired product based on its accessibility characteristics.

At the moment, it includes video games for Nintendo Switch, Xbox and PlayStation consoles. In the coming months there will be video games for both PC and smartphones and tables on the iOS and Android operating systems.

Regarding the most notable video games that appear, there are great releases from last year such as: ‘God of war Ragnarok’, ‘Pentimente’, ‘Crisis Core Final Fantasy Reunion’, ‘Pokemon Scarlet and Purple’, ‘Hades’ or ‘Fortnite’, among many others.

What else does the program offer us?

The program has sections such as news (with current events on video game accessibility), events and peripherals. The peripherals section talks about their support products, personalized controls or pushbuttons, commercial or 3D printed.

With the Ga11y program, Fundación Once wants to promote the inclusion of accessibility parameters among this important leisure and economic sector. All this, so that all people can enjoy video games.

The program, which began filming last July 2022, has recently received a Hobby Premio, one of the awards given by Hobby Consolas to recognize the best video games, hardware, consoles, gaming, series and movies of 2022.

Specifically, Fundación ONCE has been awarded the Business Insider ‘Better Capitalism’ Special Award.
