False Promise Lawsuits: Automatic Accessibility Tools Are Not Enough

Recent lawsuits against UserWay and FTC sanctions underscore the risk of blindly relying on automatic or “magic” solutions to achieve web accessibility. UserWay is facing a class-action lawsuit over alleged overpromising under the ADA, while the FTC ordered another company that touted its AI as a complete solution to pay a million-dollar fine. These cases show that automatic tools, including widgets and assistants such as “WeAllWeb”, can be supportive, but do not replace a comprehensive audit and adaptation to the WCAG standard. In short, true accessibility is born from a methodical and continuous approach, which involves reviewing, modifying and guaranteeing the real inclusion of all users.
