DIGITAL SIGNAGE ON ALMERÍA BUSES FOR PEOPLE WITH VISUAL DISABILITY

The Almería City Council presents digital signage, claiming the position as an administrative institution that advances on its path towards a new mobility in the city, more accessible, inclusive and sustainable.

De la mano de ALSA, el operador de transporte urbano de la ciudad, ha incorporado recientemente un sistema de señalética digital que ayuda a las personas con discapacidad visual y proporciona información en tiempo real sobre los próximos tiempos de paso.

What is a digital signage?

The Almería City Council has presented a system called ‘Navi-Lens’ that, deployed at Almería urban transport stops, allows people with visual disabilities to locate the stop autonomously and receive voiced information about the passing times of the next buses at said stops only using their mobile phone.

This application adds to the objective and path of making Almería an inclusive city, with mobility that is increasingly fluid, simple and more accessible for everyone.  It is another tool for the autonomy of people who are blind or have low vision.

How does Navi-lens affect other users?

For the rest of the users of the service, a very simple interface has been developed that provides the same information by reading markers and that allows all people who use public transport to know immediately, easily and updated the next transit times of their bus.

Along with this, the App allows you to eliminate another barrier that language sometimes represents when using public transport since all this information will be offered in the language in which the user has their device configured. We are talking, therefore, about a system that favors inclusion and also tourism.

What is the social impact of investing resources in tools such as digital signage?

The ONCE of Almería thanked the sensitivity and predisposition of the mayor and the City Council to continue advancing in a more accessible and inclusive city.

“This is one more step in that objective,” they indicated from the institution, recognizing “the importance of the use of public transportation for people who are blind or have low vision, a means that in our case gives us autonomy and independence in a city like Almería.”

Likewise, the director offered all people with visual problems, ONCE members, interested in this system, the support and technical service that the organization has, helping them download the App.

From Your Accessible Web we congratulate the initiative of public administrations, like this case, in order to achieve a 100% accessible society in which there are no barriers for any group.
